Field Marshal Lord Roberts of Kandahar (1832-1914), British soldier, c1901. Artist: Mortimer Luddington Menpes

Field Marshal Lord Roberts of Kandahar (1832-1914), British soldier, c1901. Frederick Sleigh Roberts (1832-1914) was one of the foremost British military figures of Victorian times. Awarded the Victoria Cross in 1858 for his actions during the Indian Mutiny, Roberts is best known for his march to capture Kandahar during the Second Afghan War of 1878-1880. He was made Baron of Kandahar and Waterford in 1892 and promoted to Field Marshal in 1895. Roberts commanded the reinforcements sent to South Africa in 1900 after the setbacks of the early part of the Boer War. After his successful intervention in the South African campaign, he returned to England to become Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, a position which he held until 1904, when he retired from the army. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Field Marshal Lord Roberts of Kandahar, a prominent British soldier during the Victorian era. The artist, Mortimer Luddington Menpes, skillfully captures the essence of this esteemed military figure in his prime. Lord Roberts's distinguished career is highlighted by his heroic actions during the Indian Mutiny, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1858. However, it was his audacious march to capture Kandahar during the Second Afghan War that truly solidified his reputation as a formidable leader. This campaign earned him the titles Baron of Kandahar and Waterford in 1892 and elevated him to Field Marshal status in 1895. Lord Roberts's strategic brilliance continued to shine when he commanded reinforcements sent to South Africa during the Boer War in 1900. His successful intervention turned the tide of early setbacks and led to victory for Britain. After returning home triumphantly from South Africa, Lord Roberts assumed the prestigious position of Commander-in-Chief of the British Army until his retirement in 1904. Throughout this illustrious career, he embodied courage, discipline, and unwavering dedication to duty. The sepia-toned photograph portrays Lord Roberts with a direct gaze and an impressive handlebar mustache—a symbol of authority befitting a man who played such a pivotal role on both domestic and international battlefields. This remarkable portrait serves as a testament not only to Lord Roberts's individual accomplishments but also to Britain's imperial might during an era defined by warfare and expansionism.
