Entering McMurdo Sound - Cape Bird and Mount Erebus, c1910–1913, (1913)

Entering McMurdo Sound - Cape Bird and Mount Erebus, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring beauty of McMurdo Sound, with Cape Bird and Mount Erebus majestically dominating the landscape. Taken during the final expedition of renowned British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this image transports us back to a time when brave men embarked on perilous journeys in pursuit of scientific discovery and human achievement. In 1910, Captain Scott led the Terra Nova Expedition, a team comprising experts from various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing, meteorology, and physics. Their mission was twofold: to continue important scientific research initiated during Scott's previous voyage to Antarctica and to be the first humans ever to reach the geographic South Pole. Tragically for Scott and his companions - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - their dreams were shattered upon reaching their destination on January 17th 1912. They discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month in claiming this historic feat. Facing harsh blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the Pole proved insurmountable for Scott's team. By late March 1912 they succumbed to exhaustion and extreme cold. It would be eight long months before their bodies were found alongside poignant diaries chronicling their valiant struggle against nature's formidable forces. This photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , offering an enduring testament to these courageous men who ventured into uncharted territory seeking knowledge but ultimately paid with their lives.
