Elizabeth Butler, 1883. Creator: Unknown

Elizabeth Butler, 1883. Elizabeth Southerden Thompson, Lady Butler (1846-1933) was a British painter, one of the few female painters to achieve fame for history paintings, especially military battle scenes, at the end of that tradition. Some of her most famous military scenes come from the Napoleonic Wars, but she covered most major 19th-century wars and painted several works depicting the First World War. She married Lieutenant General Sir William Butler, becoming Lady Butler. From " St. Nicholas: Volume X. Part I. November 1882, to May 1883". [Scribner & Co. New York, 1883]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Elizabeth Southerden Thompson, Lady Butler, a remarkable British painter who defied societal norms to achieve fame in the male-dominated art world of the 19th century. The image showcases her head and shoulders, with Lady Butler looking away from the camera, exuding an air of determination and artistic prowess. Known for her history paintings, particularly military battle scenes, Lady Butler's talent extended beyond national borders as she depicted major wars of the 19th century. Her works were not limited to just one country or conflict; she covered everything from Napoleonic Wars to World War I. Married to Lieutenant General Sir William Butler, Lady Butler became a respected figure in both art and society circles. This portrait was featured in "St. Nicholas: Volume X" published by Scribner & Co. , New York in 1883.
