The East India Steam Navigation Company's steamer Stanley, running on the Ganges, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The East India Steam Navigation Company's steamer Stanley, running on the Ganges, 1862. Some few years since the Indian Government appointed a commissioner to investigate the best means of affording facilities for navigating the rivers in India. When the report was concluded several gentlemen interested in Indian affairs formed themselves into a company, and with a small capital succeeded in placing on the Ganges a steamer and two barges, the former drawing only 18in. with 150 tons of coal on board, and the latter only 13in. The boats at present on the river, owing to their great draught of water, ranging from 3ft. 3in. to 5ft. are quite incapable of carrying the traffic on to Allahabad during the dry seasons, many of them, even during the rainy seasons, being able to get only a portion of the way. The steamer Stanley, which our Engraving represents, is 250ft. long, 40ft. beam, and 150-horse power engines, working up to 600. The trial-trip, which took place in Calcutta on the 19th of May last, was most satisfactory, and she obtained an average speed of eleven knots, the engines working at twenty-four revolutions with 40lb. of steam'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the East India Steam Navigation Company's steamer Stanley gracefully navigating the iconic Ganges River in India during the year 1862. The photograph, an intriguing glimpse into the past, offers a window into the early days of river navigation in India. The Ganges, a vital waterway for transportation and commerce, had long posed challenges due to the shallow depth of the boats in use, which ranged from 3ft. 3in. to 5ft. in draught. This limitation hindered the transportation of goods during the dry seasons, making it essential to explore alternative solutions. In response to this need, a commission was appointed by the Indian Government to investigate the best methods for facilitating river navigation. Inspired by the vision of these gentlemen, a company was formed with a modest capital. Their efforts bore fruit when they introduced a steamer, Stanley, and two barges to the Ganges. The steamer Stanley, measuring 250ft. in length and 40ft. in beam, boasted 150-horsepower engines and a shallow draft of only 18 inches with 150 tons of coal on board. The success of the trial run, which took place on May 19, 1862, in Calcutta, was overwhelming. The steamer Stanley achieved an average speed of eleven knots, with the engines working at twenty-four revolutions and 40lb. of steam. This remarkable achievement marked a significant milestone in the history of river navigation in India, offering a glimmer of hope for efficient and reliable transportation along the Ganges, even during the dry seasons.
