The Dulwich College Charity Meeting at the Adelphi Theatre, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Dulwich College Charity Meeting at the Adelphi Theatre, 1856. Mr. [Charles] Dickens, the chairman, addressing the meeting [called by Mr. Webster]...to memorialise the Charity Commissioners on behalf of the theatrical profession...Mr. [George?] Webster then...concluded a long and most interesting speech, by stating that the amount of wealth possessed by Dulwich College was perfectly astounding. The estate consisted of 1145 acres, and Sir Charles Barry had calculated each acre to be worth £1000, so that the total value of the property was £1, 145, 000. Under good management that estate would realise £50, 000 a year, but at present it did not produce more than £8000'. Dulwich College in south London was founded in 1619 by Elizabethan actor Edward Alleyn, with the original purpose of educating 12 poor scholars. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1856, depicts a significant charity meeting held at the Adelphi Theatre in London. The gathering was convened by Mr. Webster and chaired by none other than the renowned author Charles Dickens. The purpose of the meeting was to memorialise the Charity Commissioners on behalf of the theatrical profession, with the aim of improving the financial situation of Dulwich College. Edward Alleyn, an Elizabethan actor, founded Dulwich College in 1619 to provide education for twelve poor scholars. The college, located in south London, had grown significantly over the centuries and boasted an estate of 1145 acres. Sir Charles Barry, a renowned architect, had estimated that each acre was worth £1000, resulting in a staggering total value of £1,145,000. With good management, the estate could generate an annual income of £50,000. However, at the time of the meeting, it only produced £8000. In the photograph, Dickens can be seen addressing the attendees, while Mr. Webster, standing to his left, concludes his speech. The image captures the intensity and focus of the meeting, with several men in formal attire, some gesturing and others deep in thought. The black and white engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the Victorian era's social and charitable endeavors.
