EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing piece of art from the late 13th century, created by the talented Master of Boucicaut. The artwork depicts mythical dog-headed men, believed to have originated from the Isle of Agaman in the Gulf of Bengal. These fantastical creatures were described by Marco Polo, a renowned Venetian traveller and merchant who embarked on an extraordinary journey with his father and uncle in 1271. After seventeen years of exploration, Marco Polo returned to Venice with fascinating tales of his experiences, particularly at the court and in the service of Kublai Khan, the Great Khan of the Moguls and Emperor of China. However, some aspects of his accounts were deemed less reliable than others - including encounters with these enigmatic dog-headed men. The miniature featured in this print is extracted from "Le Livre des Merveilles de Marco Polo" (Book of Marvels), an illuminated manuscript housed in Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. It beautifully captures the essence of medieval legends and imaginary concepts prevalent during that era. With its vibrant colors and intricate details, this artwork transports viewers into a world filled with adventure and mystery. It serves as a reminder that throughout history, artists have played a crucial role not only in documenting events but also shaping our perception through their imaginative interpretations.
