EDITORS COMMENTS
Devil's Tower, also known as Bear Lodge or Mato Tepee of the Indians, is a prominent geological formation located in Crook County, Wyoming, near the Belle Fourche River. This stunning photograph, taken by John C.H. Grabill in the late 1800s, captures the iconic landmark from the east side. The distant view of Devil's Tower dominates the image, with trees in the foreground adding a sense of scale and depth. Devil's Tower is an igneous intrusion, rising over 1,267 feet above the surrounding terrain. It was first documented by European-Americans in 1875 during the expedition led by Lieutenant Colonel Richard I. Dodge. The unique geological structure has since become a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the American West. This photograph is a testament to the meeting of frontiers, showcasing the natural beauty of the landscape and the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples who once called this land home. The image is a reminder of the scientific and historical significance of Devil's Tower, as well as its enduring allure as a scenic and geological wonder.
