Delhi, India, c1860

Delhi, India, c1860. As seen from the palace gate. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began in the town of Meerut and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions across many regions of Company-ruled north-central India. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British power in that region and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also often known as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny, the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857 and occasionally, in India, as the First War of Independence. From The History of the Indian Mutiny, volume VII, by Charles Ball, published by The London Printing & Publishing Company (c1860)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the city of Delhi, India, in the year 1860. As seen from the palace gate, this image provides a glimpse into a significant period in Indian history - the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The rebellion originated in Meerut and quickly spread across north-central India, posing a substantial threat to British power in the region. Known by various names such as the Indian Mutiny, Sepoy Mutiny, or Great Rebellion, this uprising marked an important turning point in India's struggle for independence. It is occasionally referred to as the First War of Independence within India itself. The engraving showcases Delhi's architectural beauty amidst a tumultuous time. The buildings stand tall against the backdrop of unrest and rebellion that engulfed them. This print is part of "The History of the Indian Mutiny" authored by Charles Ball and published around 1860. Through this historical artifact, we are transported back to witness both the grandeur of Delhi's structures and its role as a battleground during one of India's most significant uprisings against British colonial rule. It serves as a reminder not only of past struggles but also highlights how far Delhi has come since those turbulent times.
