The Crucifixion with a Carthusian Monk, c. 1460. Creator: Rogier van der Weyden (Flemish, c
The Crucifixion with a Carthusian Monk, c. 1460. This painting shows a Carthusian monk kneeling in devotion and prayer before the Crucifixion. It is likely that this panel was intended for the cell of a monk in an unknown monastery. The Carthusians were particularly devoted to the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ, and devotional images were provided for each monks cell. The Carthusian order was founded by Saint Bruno in 1084 with the purpose of providing the strictest separation from the world. The first Carthusians were dedicated to contemplation through silence, prayer, poverty, penance, and almost continuous occupancy of a solitary cell. The solitary life could only be maintained through the establishment of separate cell houses. Each community of monks was limited to the apostolic number of 12, though exceptions were sometimes made. They were recognized by their white, full-length, cowled habit called the scapular, shown here. The artist has not been identified

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Crucifixion with a Carthusian Monk" painted by Rogier van der Weyden around 1460. The focal point of the painting is a devout Carthusian monk, kneeling in deep prayer and devotion before the powerful image of Christ's crucifixion. This exquisite panel was likely created specifically for the cell of a monk within an unknown monastery. The Carthusians, known for their unwavering dedication to the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ, provided each monk with devotional images in their cells. Founded by Saint Bruno in 1084, the Carthusian order aimed to achieve utmost separation from worldly distractions. The first Carthusians were committed to contemplation through silence, prayer, poverty, penance, and solitary confinement within their cells. To sustain this solitary lifestyle, separate cell houses were established where communities of monks resided. Each community consisted of only twelve members (with occasional exceptions), symbolizing apostolic tradition. In this artwork, we can observe these devoted monks wearing white cowled habits called scapulars – distinctive attire that identified them as part of the Carthusian order. Although the artist responsible for this masterpiece remains unidentified, its profound depiction evokes a sense of reverence and spiritual connection between man and divinity. Preserved through time and now presented as a striking print by Heritage Art/Heritage Images (not affiliated with any company or commercial use), it serves as both an artistic marvel and testament to religious devotion throughout history.
