Crown worn by George V at the Delhi Durbar in 1911, 1962. Creator: Unknown
Crown worn by George V at the Delhi Durbar in 1911, 1962. The Imperial Crown of India is set with 6, 170 diamonds, 9 emeralds, 4 rubies, and 4 sapphires. For many centuries the normal crowns of England have been restricted by statute to the shores of Great Britain, and accordingly a special crown had to be made for the ceremony overseas'. The king wrote in his diary that it was heavy and uncomfortable to wear: "Rather tired after wearing my crown for 3½ hours; it hurt my head, as it is pretty heavy." The crown is part of the Royal Collection at the Tower of London. From "The Crown Jewels in the Tower of London", by Martin Holmes, F.S.A.. [Her Majesty's Stationery, London, 1962]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the majestic presence of George V wearing the Imperial Crown of India during the Delhi Durbar in 1911. The Imperial Crown of India is a magnificent piece of jewellery, adorned with an astonishing 6,170 diamonds, 9 emeralds, 4 rubies, and 4 sapphires. Due to the statutory restrictions of the normal crowns of England being limited to the shores of Great Britain, a special crown was created for the overseas ceremony. George V, who was the King of Great Britain and Emperor of India at the time, wrote in his diary that wearing the crown for over three and a half hours was tiring and uncomfortable, as it was quite heavy. The crown is now part of the Royal Collection at the Tower of London. The Delhi Durbar was an extravagant event held to mark the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary as Emperor and Empress of India. The photograph, taken in the 1910s, is from the book 'The Crown Jewels in the Tower of London' by Martin Holmes, published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office in 1962. The book provides a detailed account of the history and significance of the Crown Jewels, which have been an integral part of British history and imperialism for centuries.
