EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the moment of consecration for the Bishop of Montreal, Rev. Dr. Francis Fulford, in the hallowed halls of Westminster Abbey, London, in 1850. The ceremony, presided over by Archbishop John Bird Sumner of Canterbury, marks the formal installation of Fulford as the spiritual leader of Montreal's diocese. At the appointed hour of eleven o'clock, the procession formed, and the Archbishop took up his place on the north side of the altar, while Bishops of London and Manchester stood on the south side. The Bishop designate, Fulford, was led to the chapel for his investiture, where he was dressed in the rochet – a long, sleeveless vestment worn by bishops during liturgical functions. The diocese of Montreal, newly constituted from the former diocese of Quebec, was the focus of this significant event. The print captures the solemnity and grandeur of the occasion, with the bishops in their ceremonial robes, candlesticks held aloft, and the Archbishop's mitre and crosier adding to the metaphorical weight of the moment. The Illustrated London News, from which this print is taken, documented the event in detail, providing a glimpse into the inner workings of the Church of England during the Victorian era. The old boys network, or the 'club' of influential churchmen, was a powerful force during this time, and this print offers a window into their world. The print, created by Smyth, is a testament to the enduring power of religious rituals and the importance of tradition in shaping the spiritual lives of communities.
