EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in history as Cinghalese Chiefs of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) eagerly await the arrival of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, in Kandy during his royal visit in 1876. The sketch, created by an unknown artist for the Illustrated London News, depicts Takiri Banda of Panabokke, President of the Tribunal, Dumbera, and Giragama, Ratemahatmeya of Yatimwera, among other chiefs, dressed in their traditional attire. The Cinghalese Chiefs, most of whom spoke English fluently, were a striking sight with their broad embroidered gold belts, round their waists, and jackets made of rich and stiff brocaded silk. The exquisite textiles, unique to each chief, added to their grandeur with no two having the same pattern or color. The chiefs, who were generally portly, exuded a pleasant and graceful demeanor. Their bare feet, a common practice in the region, completed their traditional appearance. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, spent the evening engaging in friendly conversation with the Kandyan Chiefs, marking a significant cultural exchange between Britain and Ceylon during this royal visit. The photograph, a testament to the rich textile heritage of the region and the cultural exchange during the colonial era, remains an intriguing glimpse into the past.
