The Choir, Sherborne Abbey, Dorset, 1924-1926. Artist: E Bastard

The Choir, Sherborne Abbey, Dorset, 1924-1926. A Benedictine Abbey was founded at Sherborne in 998 by St Wulfsin, the twentieth Bishop of Sherborne. The Dissolution of the Monasteries closed the abbey in 1539, but the local people bought the abbey church in order to use it as their parish church. The choir, famous for its fan-vaulting, was rebuilt in Perpendicular style in the 15th century. A print from Hutchinsons Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, volume II, 1924-1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Choir, Sherborne Abbey, Dorset, 1924-1926. A captivating print capturing the timeless beauty of Sherborne Abbey's choir. This remarkable piece of artistry was created by E Bastard as part of Hutchinsons Britain Beautiful collection in the early 20th century. Sherborne Abbey holds a rich history dating back to its founding in 998 by St Wulfsin, the twentieth Bishop of Sherborne. Despite being closed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, it was saved from ruin when local residents purchased it for use as their parish church. The focal point of this awe-inspiring photograph is undoubtedly the choir with its renowned fan-vaulting. Rebuilt in Perpendicular style during the 15th century, it stands as a testament to exquisite medieval architecture and craftsmanship. Through this monochrome image, we are transported back to a time when religion played an integral role in English society. The intricate details showcased on every window pane and stone evoke a sense of reverence and devotion that has endured throughout centuries. E Bastard's skillful composition allows us to appreciate not only the architectural grandeur but also feel connected to our country's religious heritage. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded that even amidst changing times and shifting beliefs, places like Sherborne Abbey continue to inspire faith and captivate hearts.
