EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Cho Hyun-myeong from Punhyang Cho Family, dating back to the 1800s. The creator of this remarkable portrait remains unknown, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to its historical significance. In this image, we are presented with two portraits that depict members of the illustrious Cho family, hailing from the region of Punhyang. On the left side stands Cho Jae-ho (1702-1762), cousin to his counterpart on the right, Cho Hyun-myeong. Both individuals held prestigious positions as High State Councilors or yeong-uijeong during their time. The creation of these portraits was commissioned by the Cho family as a testament to their familial pride and honor. In Korean tradition, such portraits were meticulously copied for distribution among relatives during Confucian rituals - a practice that continues even today with similar portraits preserved within the collection owned by the Cho family in Korea. This particular album painting is rendered using ink and color on silk, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship prevalent during Korea's Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care, this artwork serves as a treasured piece of heritage art that offers us a glimpse into Korea's rich cultural history.
