Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis: A Resolute Commander in the Face of Revolution". This print captures the essence of Charles Cornwallis, a prominent figure in English military history during the late 18th century. Painted by H Ogborne and featured in Walter Hutchinson's "Story of the British Nation" this portrait showcases Cornwallis' commanding presence and unwavering determination. Born in 1738, Cornwallis served as Governor General of Bengal from 1786 to 1793 and briefly again in 1805. However, it was his role as Major General during the American Revolution that truly defined his legacy. In a pivotal moment at Yorktown, Virginia in 1781, Washington's forces cornered Cornwallis, leading to his ultimate surrender. This defeat proved instrumental in ending the American Revolution. Cornwallis exudes an air of authority with his resplendent sash and distinguished military attire. His piercing gaze reflects both strength and intelligence—a testament to his strategic prowess on the battlefield and political acumen off it. As an aristocrat deeply entrenched within Britain's imperialist ambitions, Cornwallis played a significant role not only as a soldier but also as a politician-statesman. This portrait encapsulates his multifaceted persona—both warrior and diplomat—in vibrant color. H Ogborne masterfully brings out every detail of this historical figure through meticulous brushwork. The print serves as a reminder of Charles Cornwallis' indelible mark on history—a man who shaped nations amidst revolution and conflict.
