The Char-a-banc presented to Her Majesty by the King of the French, 1844

The Char-a-banc presented to Her Majesty by the King of the French, 1844. Queen Victoria and King Louis Philippe of France ride from the Queens Entrance at Windsor Castle to Twickenham. This elegant vehicle is a modification of the family jaunting van of Normandy...It is built to accommodate eight persons; the body of the carriage being divided into four double seats. A neat canopy, supported by brass pillars, protects the company against the sun...The framework of the carriage is light, but substantial, firmly girded with iron fittings, and suited to the traffic of rougher roads than are ordinarily found in this country...Approach to the seats is gained from the sides, by three steps, which close and shut in beneath the floor of the carriage. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

The framework of the carriage is light but substantial, firmly girded with iron fittings and suited to rougher roads than are ordinarily found in this country. . . This print captures a momentous occasion when Queen Victoria received a grand gift from King Louis Philippe - The Char-a-banc. In this historic image, we witness their majesties embarking on a journey together through picturesque British countryside. The intricately designed horse-drawn carriage exudes opulence and sophistication. With its spacious seating arrangement for eight individuals divided into four double seats, it offers comfort fit for royalty. The graceful canopy shields them from harsh sunlight as they traverse along roads that can withstand even rough terrains. As Queen Victoria sits beside her esteemed guest, both monarchs radiate regality and power. Their presence commands attention as they become partakers in an extraordinary mode of transportation gifted by one ruler to another. This engraving serves as a testament not only to their strong diplomatic ties but also showcases technological advancements during that era.
