Cawnpore, India, c1860. Artist: Charles Mottram

Cawnpore, India, c1860. As seen from the river. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began in the town of Meerut and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions across many regions of Company-ruled north-central India. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British power in that region and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also often known as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny, the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857 and occasionally, in India, as the First War of Independence. From The History of the Indian Mutiny, volume VII, by Charles Ball, published by The London Printing & Publishing Company (c1860)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to Cawnpore, India in the year 1860. As seen from the river, this image offers a glimpse into the aftermath of one of the most significant events in Indian history - the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The rebellion, also known as the Indian Mutiny or the Great Rebellion, began in Meerut and quickly spread across north-central India. The British Empire's power was severely threatened during this time, as mutinies and civilian rebellions erupted throughout Company-ruled regions. It was only with the fall of Gwalior on June 20th, 1858 that they were able to contain and suppress the rebellion. In this engraving captured by Charles Mottram and Samuel Prout for "The History of the Indian Mutiny" we see a peaceful countryside scene along with a sailing boat navigating through the river. The buildings in Cawnpore stand tall against its backdrop while boats dotting its waters add an element of transport and movement. This print not only showcases historical significance but also highlights elements such as architecture, geography, transportation, and daily life during that era. It serves as a reminder of how past events have shaped our present world while inviting us to explore further into India's rich history.
