Captain Scott Wearing The Wallet in Which He Carried His Sledging Journals, c1910-1911, (1913)

Captain Scott Wearing The Wallet in Which He Carried His Sledging Journals, c1910-1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a poignant moment in the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, as he wears the wallet that held his precious sledging journals. Taken around 1910-1911, this image showcases the determination and scientific ambition that drove Scott's Terra Nova Expedition to Antarctica. Accompanied by a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists among others; Scott aimed to continue his scientific research from his previous Antarctic expedition while also striving to be the first person to reach the South Pole. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring treacherous conditions and battling against time and nature itself; Scott and four members of his team finally reached their long-awaited destination. However, their triumph was overshadowed by disappointment as they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them to it just a month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey; Scott and his remaining companions met their untimely demise at the end of March. It would take eight months before their bodies were found alongside their invaluable diaries. This particular photograph serves as a testament to Captain Scott's unwavering spirit in pursuit of knowledge amidst extreme adversity. Preserved within its frame is not only an artifact from history but also a reminder of humanity's unyielding quest for exploration even in the face of insurmountable challenges.
