Boeing T50-BO-8A (502-10VC) Turboshaft Engine, ca. 1950s. Creator: Boeing Aircraft Co
In the mid-1940s, Boeing engineers conducted research to become familiar with gas turbines, but it became apparent that the research engines were significant in themselves. First engine run was the 667 N (150 lb) thrust Model 500 turbojet, closely followed by the 119 kw (160 shp) Model 502 turboprop. Because no applications materialized for the turbojet, efforts were focused on the Model 502, initially developed as a turboprop and later as the more widely used turboshaft engine, first delivered in 1949. In late-1951, a Model 502 powered Kaman K-225 helicopter became the worlds first gas turbine-powered helicopter, and, in late-1952, a Model 502 powered Cessna XL-19B Bird Dog became the worlds first turboprop-powered light aircraft. By the mid-1960s, significant power and reliability improvements produced the Model 502-10VC, the first U.S. turbine engine in the 149 to 224 kw (200 to 300 shp) range to receive an approved 150-hour qualification. This artifact powered the Gyrodyne QH-50C (DSN-3) drone helicopter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Boeing T50-BO-8A (502-10VC) Turboshaft Engine, a remarkable piece of engineering from the 1950s. Created by the innovative minds at Boeing Aircraft Co, this engine is a testament to their pioneering research in gas turbines. Originally intended as a research project, it quickly became apparent that these engines held immense potential on their own. The Model 500 turbojet with its impressive thrust of 667 N (150 lb) was swiftly followed by the Model 502 turboprop, generating an impressive 119 kW (160 shp). While no practical applications were found for the turbojet variant, efforts were focused on developing and refining the Model 502. In late-1951, history was made when a Model 502-powered Kaman K-225 helicopter took flight as the world's first gas turbine-powered helicopter. This groundbreaking achievement was soon followed by another milestone in late-1952 when a Model 502-powered Cessna XL-19B Bird Dog became the world's first turboprop-powered light aircraft. Over time, significant improvements in power and reliability led to the development of the highly advanced Model 502-10VC. This particular artifact played an integral role in powering the Gyrodyne QH-50C (DSN-3) drone helicopter - not only marking another triumph for Boeing but also becoming America's first turbine engine within the range of 149 to224 kW (200 to300 shp) to receive official qualification after successfully completing150 hours of rigorous testing. The print captures both technological prowess and historical significance encapsulated within this extraordinary engine created by Boeing Aircraft Co.
