EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the momentous occasion of the baptism of Prince Louis Napoleon in the hallowed halls of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, in 1856. The Imperial Prince, held in the arms of his governess to the right of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, is the focus of the image. Surrounding the royal family are various ladies, including sub-governesses and a nurse, all dressed in elegant attire. To the front of the altar, two masters and assistants of ceremonies make their way towards the prie-dieu, making obeisances to the Emperor and Empress before depositing the necessary items for the baptism on the credence tables. The Cardinal Legate then completes the religious ceremony, with the Imperial infant having received the baptismal water. Once the ceremony is finished, an assistant master of ceremonies steps forward to the middle of the choir and proclaims three times, "Vive le Prince Imperial!" The Empress, standing proudly and holding the Prince up in her arms, looks on with a mixture of joy and pride. This photograph, taken from an 1856 issue of the Illustrated London News, offers a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of the imperial court during the Second French Empire. The intricate details of the ceremony, from the elegant attire of the attendees to the solemnity of the ritual itself, make for a captivating image that transports us back in time.
