The Band of the Royal Horse-Guards, Blue Playing in Kensington-Gardens, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Band of the Royal Horse-Guards, Blue Playing in Kensington-Gardens, [London], 1856....the band of the Blues again played in Kensington Gardens, where the fineness of the weather attracted an enormous crowd. The total number of persons who entered the Gardens during the day was about 80, 000...Instead of a programme composed of vulgar dance tunes, the band adopted one exclusively devoted to sacred music of the gravest character...there is reason to hope the question, whether the mass of people in this immense metropolis is better employed on Sundays in healthful recreation out of doors than in gloomy and silent reclusion'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures The Band of the Royal Horse-Guards, Blue, performing in Kensington-Gardens, London, in 1856. The image, from the Illustrated London News, documents a unique musical event that drew an impressive crowd of approximately 80,000 people on a fine Sunday. In contrast to the typical program of vulgar dance tunes, the band chose to perform a sacred music repertoire of the gravest character. The serene setting of the gardens, with their lush greenery and picturesque pavilion, provided an idyllic backdrop for this cultural event. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into Victorian fashion, with the women wearing crinolines and hoopskirts, and the men donning top hats and tailcoats. The band members, proudly representing the Royal Horse Guards, are seen in their military uniforms. The scene exudes a sense of community and enjoyment, as people from all walks of life came together for a day out in nature. The popularity of Kensington Gardens as a tourist attraction is evident, with the large crowd gathered around the bandstand. This photograph not only showcases the elegance and charm of the Victorian era but also highlights the importance of outdoor recreation and the role of music in bringing people together. The Band of the Royal Horse-Guards, Blue, in their performance, provided a memorable experience for the masses, offering hope that the question of whether the urban population was better employed on Sundays in healthful recreation rather than in silent reclusion was being answered affirmatively.
