Ball at Guildhall, in aid of the Patriotic Fund, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Ball at Guildhall, in aid of the Patriotic Fund, 1854. Fundraising event in London during the Crimean War, ...for the relief of the widows and orphans of those who may fall in the present mighty war with Russia...Two thousand persons were present...Jullien's quadrille band had been engaged...For such of the company as did not dance, the committee had arranged a select concert in the Council Chamber...Madame Anna Thillon sang an English ballad with her usual grace and finish...At the termination of the concert the audience poured into the ball-room, which soon became almost too crowded for the dancers; when M. Jullien struck up one of his most admired polkas, and the scene - what with the dancing, the crowding, the lights, the banners, and music - became very brilliant and exciting. Refreshments were provided in abundance, and the festivities were kept up to a late hour'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
Ball at Guildhall, in aid of the Patriotic Fund, 1854" is a captivating image of a grand fundraising event held in London during the Crimean War. The photograph, created by an unknown artist, captures the essence of unity and community spirit as two thousand individuals gathered together to raise funds for the relief of widows and orphans of soldiers who may fall in the ongoing conflict with Russia. The scene is set in the historic Guildhall, with its ornate architecture and grandeur on full display. The room is filled with elegantly dressed men and women, all coming together for a common cause. Jullien's quadrille band, a popular ensemble of the time, provides the lively music for those who wish to dance. For those who prefer not to dance, a select concert is arranged in the Council Chamber, featuring the beautiful voice of Madame Anna Thillon singing an English ballad with "grace and finish." As the concert concludes, the audience pours into the ballroom, which soon becomes too crowded for the dancers. M. Jullien strikes up one of his most admired polkas, and the scene transforms into a brilliant and exciting spectacle, with the dancing, the crowding, the lights, the banners, and music all contributing to the festive atmosphere. Refreshments are provided in abundance, and the festivities are kept up to a late hour. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the community spirit that emerged during times of war and hardship, as people came together to support those in need. It also offers a glimpse into the social and cultural landscape of London during the mid-19th century, making it an invaluable historical document.
