EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the Aviary at Kina Castle, Drottningholm, a magnificent architectural masterpiece designed by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz during the 1750s. Located in Ekerö, Stockholm, Sweden, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a stunning example of 18th-century Chinoiserie architecture. The print, created using pen and gray ink wash in gray watercolour on paper, showcases the intricate facade of the aviary, with its undulating eaves and delicate Chinese-inspired motifs. The plan of the building is also presented, revealing the thoughtful layout of the interior spaces. Adelcrantz, a renowned Swedish architect, drew inspiration from Chinese pavilions and buildings for this project, resulting in a unique and exotic design that was popular during the Chinoiserie movement. The aviary, which housed a collection of exotic birds, was a favorite of Queen Lovisa Ulrika of Sweden and was used as a retreat for her and her guests. The Aviary at Kina Castle is a testament to the artistic and cultural influences that shaped the 18th century in Sweden. Today, it is preserved and displayed at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and historical significance of this remarkable building.
