The Approaching Naval Review - H.M. Divisional Ships of the Gun-Boat Flotilla, at Moorings off Ryde, Creator: Smyth
The Approaching Naval Review - H.M. Divisional Ships of the Gun-Boat Flotilla, at Moorings off Ryde, 1856. Blue Division, "Brunswick", Captain Yelverton. White Division, "Colossus", Captain Keppel. Red Division, "Algiers", Captain Codrington. Light Division, "Sanspareil", Captain Key...The flotilla of gun-boats to which the ships in our illustration belong consists of four divisions - each division numbering about fifty boats...the three first divisions have their funnels, mastheads, &c. painted the colours of the division to which they belong, and the light division is distinguished from the others by having the mastheads painted with black and white bands. All the boats are high pressure, and, when under steam, present a most extraordinary and singular appearance; all the divisional ships are noble screw-vessels'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "The Approaching Naval Review - H.M. Divisional Ships of the Gun-Boat Flotilla," was created by the acclaimed British artist Smyth in 1856. The image depicts a stunning assembly of Her Majesty's gun-boats moored off Ryde, showcasing the "Blue Division," "White Division," "Red Division," and "Light Division." The "Blue Division" is represented by the "Brunswick," commanded by Captain Yelverton, while the "White Division" is led by the "Colossus" under Captain Keppel. The "Red Division" is headed by the "Algiers," with Captain Codrington at the helm. The "Light Division" is distinguished by the "Sanspareil," under Captain Key. The gun-boat flotilla, consisting of approximately fifty boats in each division, is a sight to behold. Each division is identified by the distinctive colors of its funnels, mastheads, and other features. The blue division boats bear blue paint, the white division boats display white, and the red division boats proudly display red. The light division boats, however, are unique with their mastheads painted with black and white bands. These gun-boats are high-pressure vessels and present a remarkable appearance when under steam. The divisional ships are impressive screw-vessels that add to the grandeur of this naval review. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1856, offers a glimpse into the splendor and organization of the British naval forces during this era.
