Anne, Queen of Great Britain, 1702-1714 (1906)
Anne, Queen of Great Britain, 1702-1714 (1906). Facsimile in the colours of the original enamel of Queen Anne and Prince George of Denmark by Charles Boit, in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. Anne (1665-1714) was the daughter of James II, deposed by William of Orange in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The last Stuart monarch, she came to the throne after the death of William in 1702, and became the first monarch of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the signing of the Act of Union in 1707. Her reign saw a decline of the power of the crown in favour of that of ministers as well as the development of a two party system of politics. Her inability to produce an heir precipitated a succession crisis, with parliament passing legislation to hand the crown to the House of Hanover in order to prevent the Catholic Old Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart, from claiming the throne. A print from Queen Anne, by Herbert Paul, Goupil and Co, London, 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the regal portrait of Anne, Queen of Great Britain from 1702 to 1714. Created in 1906 by Charles Boit, this facsimile beautifully captures the original enamel artwork of Queen Anne and her husband Prince George of Denmark. The print is part of the esteemed Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. Anne's reign marked a significant period in British history. As the daughter of James II, she ascended to the throne after William III's death and became the first monarch of both Great Britain and Ireland following the Act of Union in 1707. However, her rule was not without challenges. During her time as queen, power shifted from the crown to ministers while a two-party political system began to take shape. Additionally, Anne faced a succession crisis due to her inability to produce an heir. In order to prevent James Francis Edward Stuart, known as the Catholic Old Pretender, from claiming the throne, parliament passed legislation that ultimately led to handing over power to the House of Hanover. This remarkable print serves as a reminder not only of Queen Anne's reign but also highlights key moments in British history such as the Glorious Revolution and Act of Union. It stands as a testament to Charles Boit's artistic talent and offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate this significant era through visual representation.
