Amitabha Triad, possibly 1400s. Creator: Unknown
Amitabha Triad, possibly 1400s. This hanging scroll illustrates a dramatic apparition of Buddha Amitabha (??? in Chinese) and the two attendant bodhisattvas, or saintly beings, in the midst of colourful light and swirling clouds. The one who carries a miniature image of Amitabha in its jeweled crown is Avalokitesvara (?? in Chinese); and the other who carries a flower vase is Mahasthamaprapta (??? in Chinese). Previously, this work was identified as a rare example of a Korean Buddhist painting from the early Joseon period. In contrast to surviving Korean works from this time the scroll stands out for its fine details. Elements such as the striped almond-shaped halo that encircles the main Buddha, firm red lines that define each deitys facial features, and the naturalistic rendition of flowing garments identifies it as an excellent example of early Ming period Chinese Buddhist painting

1368 1644 Hanging Scroll Ink And Colour On Silk Ming Dynasty
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Amitabha Triad, believed to have been created in the 1400s by an unknown artist. The hanging scroll depicts a breathtaking scene of Buddha Amitabha and two bodhisattvas amidst vibrant light and swirling clouds. One of the bodhisattvas, Avalokitesvara, carries a jeweled crown adorned with a miniature image of Amitabha, while the other, Mahasthamaprapta, holds a flower vase. Initially thought to be a rare Korean Buddhist painting from the early Joseon period, this artwork stands out for its meticulous details when compared to surviving Korean works from that time. Notably, it features elements like the striped almond-shaped halo surrounding the main Buddha and bold red lines defining each deity's facial features. Additionally, the flowing garments are rendered with remarkable naturalism. Created during China's early Ming period (1368-1644), this Chinese Buddhist painting exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship. Painted using ink and color on silk as part of a hanging scroll format, it now resides in The Cleveland Museum of Art. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has expertly captured this stunning piece through their print reproduction. This image serves as both an aesthetic delight and an insightful glimpse into ancient religious artistry during China's illustrious Ming dynasty era.
