EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print showcases Alexander Mackenzie, the second Prime Minister of Canada, circa 1890. The artist behind this remarkable portrait is Cassell, Petter & Galpin. Mackenzie (1822-1892), a prominent figure in Canadian politics, was chosen to form a government in 1873 following the downfall of John A Macdonald's Conservative administration due to the Pacific scandal. He emerged victorious in the subsequent general election and served as Prime Minister until his defeat by Macdonald and the Conservatives in 1878. The image captures Mackenzie's dignified presence and statesman-like demeanor. His impressive beard adds an air of wisdom and authority to his countenance. As leader of the Canadian Liberal Party, he played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape during this period. This lithograph is part of The Modern Portrait Gallery collection published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin - esteemed publishers based in London, Paris, and New York around that time. Its vibrant colors bring life to Mackenzie's portrait while also reflecting the artistic style prevalent during the late 19th century. Mackenzie's Scottish heritage is evident through his appearance and background as well; hailing from Scotland himself, he brought with him a unique perspective that influenced his policies as Prime Minister. Overall, this print serves as both a historical artifact and an artistic masterpiece that immortalizes Alexander Mackenzie's significant contribution to Canadian politics during one of its most transformative periods.
