Access II emissions research, USA, 2014. Creator: NASA
Access II emissions research, USA, 2014. In May 2014, National Aeronautics and Space Administration researchers began taking to the skies with a DC-8 and other aircraft to conduct a series of flight tests designed to study the effects on emissions and contrail formation of burning alternative fuels in jet engines. The Alternative Fuel Effects on Contrails and Cruise Emissions flight tests, known as ACCESS II for short, featured a number of new plot twists to keep the research story interesting and moving forward. Among them were new science instruments, new flight profiles, and a new international flavor to the effort thanks to the direct participation of research aircraft and scientists from Germany and Canada

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a significant moment in the Access II emissions research conducted by NASA in 2014. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration embarked on a series of flight tests using a DC-8 aircraft and other planes to examine the impact of burning alternative fuels on emissions and contrail formation in jet engines. This groundbreaking study, known as ACCESS II, introduced several intriguing elements to propel the research forward. One notable aspect was the inclusion of new scientific instruments that enhanced data collection capabilities. Additionally, novel flight profiles were implemented to ensure comprehensive analysis during each test. However, what truly added an international dimension to this endeavor was the direct involvement of German and Canadian researchers and their respective aircraft. The photograph showcases an iconic Douglas DC-8 soaring through American skies against a backdrop of vibrant colors. It symbolizes not only technological advancements but also NASA's commitment towards understanding environmental implications associated with air transport. By investigating condensation trails (contrails) formed during flights, scientists aimed to gain insights into pollution levels caused by aviation activities. This image serves as a reminder of our ongoing efforts to explore space while simultaneously safeguarding our planet's delicate ecosystem. This snapshot from Heritage Images encapsulates NASA's dedication to research and development for sustainable transportation solutions without mentioning any commercial use intentions explicitly.
