The Bahamas Andros Island and the Tongue of the Ocean
November 21, 2009 - The Bahamas Andros Island and the Tongue of the Ocean. This scene from Earth orbit appears much more peaceful than earlier in the month, when Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ida was not only threatening but seriously affecting several areas in several oceans. The dark blue area, aptly named Tongue of the Ocean, is characterized by water depths as great as 3000 meters (almost two miles). The Atlantic Ocean just east of Eleuthra Island is nearly 5000 meters deep. By comparison, the waters of the Bahama Platform are less than 15 meters deep

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of Andros Island and the Tongue of the Ocean in The Bahamas. Taken from Earth orbit on November 21,2009, this image showcases a tranquil scene contrasting with the recent havoc caused by Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ida. The deep blue expanse known as the Tongue of the Ocean stretches out before us, reaching depths of up to 3000 meters (nearly two miles). Just east of Eleuthra Island lies the vast Atlantic Ocean, plunging to an astonishing depth of approximately 5000 meters. In contrast, the Bahama Platform's waters appear shallow at less than 15 meters. From this unique perspective in space, we can appreciate both the topography and geography that make these islands so remarkable. Andros Island stands proudly amidst its surrounding aqua-colored oceanic trench and barrier reef. In this aerial view devoid of human presence, nature takes center stage. The vibrant colors captured by Stocktrek Images bring life to this otherwise untouched landscape. This photograph serves as a reminder that even in times of turmoil like Hurricane Ida's threat just weeks prior, moments of tranquility can be found within our planet's breathtaking natural wonders.
