Cards from Science Photo Library
Trofim Denisovich Lysenko, Russian biologist
Trofim Denisovich Lysenko, Russian biologist, born in Karlovka, Poltava Oblast, Ukraine, on September 29, 1898. Lysenko graduated from the Kiev Institute of Agriculture in 1925 and became concerned with the cultivation of new varieties of plants. Lysenko believed that acquired characteristics could be inherited or manipulated by environmental control and denounced those geneticists (notably Mendel) who had maintained that such characteristics were innate. His heretic ideas enjoyed Stalins patronage & thus permeated Soviet agricultural policy, with disastrous consequences. Stalins death in 1953 heralded his decline & ultimate dismissal in 1964

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Trofim Denisovich Lysenko, a renowned Russian biologist whose controversial ideas revolutionized the field of genetics. Born in Karlovka, Ukraine, on September 29,1898, Lysenko's academic journey led him to graduate from the prestigious Kiev Institute of Agriculture in 1925. Lysenko's groundbreaking theories centered around the manipulation and inheritance of acquired characteristics through environmental control. Challenging established geneticists like Mendel who believed that such traits were innate, Lysenko gained favor with Stalin himself. This patronage allowed his unorthodox ideas to permeate Soviet agricultural policy during Stalin's reign, leading to disastrous consequences for the nation's farming practices. However, with Stalin's demise in 1953 came a decline in Lysenko's influence and eventual dismissal in 1964. Despite his fall from grace within scientific circles, this photograph serves as a reminder of Lysenko's significant impact on biology and agriculture. Captured by Science Photo Library without any commercial intentions or affiliations mentioned here (not related to the company), this portrait immortalizes Trofim Denisovich Lysenko as an influential figure - a botanist, biologist, geneticist, and agriculturalist whose legacy continues to spark debates among scientists worldwide.
