Greetings Card : Sparks from a thermite reaction
Cards from Science Photo Library
Sparks from a thermite reaction
Thermite reaction. Time-exposure image of sparks caused by a thermite reaction as an aluminium wrench strikes a block of rusty iron (iron oxide). Aluminium (Al) is more reactive than iron (Fe) and can remove oxygen (O) from it. The heat needed to begin the reaction is provided here by friction between the wrench and block. The equation for the reaction is: 2Al + Fe2O3 ----> Al2O3 + 2Fe The heat and sparks generated by a thermite greaction can be a fire hazard. Photographed during research conducted by the Health and Safety Laboratory in Britain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing sparks produced during a thermite reaction. The image showcases an aluminium wrench striking a block of rusty iron, resulting in a spectacular display of fiery sparks. In this chemical process, aluminium's higher reactivity than iron enables it to extract oxygen from iron oxide (rust), forming aluminium oxide and pure iron. The photograph was taken as part of research conducted by the Health and Safety Laboratory in Britain, highlighting the potential fire hazard associated with thermite reactions. The heat required for this reaction is generated through friction between the wrench and the block, igniting a dazzling shower of sparks. Thermite reactions are not only visually stunning but also have practical applications in various industries such as welding and incendiary devices. However, their intense heat and sparks necessitate careful handling due to safety concerns. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this momentous event, showcasing both the beauty and danger inherent in chemical reactions. This print serves as a testament to the power of chemistry while reminding us of its potential hazards if not handled responsibly.
