Greetings Card : High temperature superconductor
Cards from Science Photo Library
High temperature superconductor
High temperature superconductor. Molecular model of part of the high temperature superconductor, YBCO-6. Superconductors transmit electrical current without any electrical resistance and hence with no energy loss. YBCO stands for the elements yttrium (Y), barium (B), copper (C) and oxygen (O) which form this substance. Atoms are colour-coded: oxygen (red), barium (yellow), yttrium (purple) and copper (blue). Copper atoms lie at the centre of copper oxide pyramids (blue). Superconductors which work at a relatively warm 30 Kelvin (-243 degrees celsius) were first created in 1986. High temperature superconductors such as this one can work at temperatures over 125 Kelvin

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a molecular model of a high temperature superconductor, specifically YBCO-6. The intricate structure represents the elements yttrium, barium, copper, and oxygen that combine to form this extraordinary substance. Each atom is color-coded for clarity: red for oxygen, yellow for barium, purple for yttrium, and blue for copper. Superconductors possess an incredible ability to transmit electrical current without any resistance or energy loss. This groundbreaking discovery revolutionized the field of physics when it was first achieved in 1986. Unlike traditional conductors which require extremely low temperatures to function efficiently, high temperature superconductors like YBCO-6 can operate at temperatures exceeding 125 Kelvin. At the heart of this molecular model lie copper atoms surrounded by copper oxide pyramids represented in blue. These structures play a crucial role in enabling the exceptional conductivity exhibited by high temperature superconductors. The image serves as a testament to the remarkable advancements made in scientific research and highlights the beauty found within these microscopic worlds. It encapsulates both artistry and physics seamlessly while shedding light on one of humanity's most significant achievements – harnessing electricity with minimal energy loss through superconductivity.
