Engraving of biologist Thomas Huxley, in 1881
Thomas Huxley. Engraving of English biologist Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), in 1881. He studied medicine and surgery, and joined the Royal Navy where he did important work on plankton. Huxleys name, however, was made as a popularizer of science, notably Darwins theory of evolution. In 1860 Huxley presented Darwins theory at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford, where he faced his opponent Bishop Samuel Wilberforce. Huxley won the day. His study of primates established man as one of them, and turned evolution into a debate of science rather than emotion. Huxley invented the word agnostic to describe his religious beliefs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an engraving of the esteemed biologist Thomas Huxley, taken in 1881. Thomas Henry Huxley, a prominent English scientist, dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding in various fields. Initially trained in medicine and surgery, he later joined the Royal Navy where he conducted groundbreaking research on plankton. However, it was as a popularizer of science that Huxley truly made his mark. In 1860, at a pivotal meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science held at Oxford, he fearlessly presented Charles Darwin's revolutionary theory of evolution. Standing against Bishop Samuel Wilberforce as his opponent, Huxley emerged victorious and forever changed the course of scientific discourse. Huxley's meticulous study of primates further solidified our understanding that humans are indeed part of this diverse group. By transforming evolution into a matter debated through scientific evidence rather than emotional bias, he paved the way for future advancements in evolutionary biology. Notably inventive with words as well as ideas, Huxley coined the term "agnostic" to describe his religious beliefs – an enduring contribution to philosophical discussions. This remarkable portrait captures not only Thomas Huxley's intellectual prowess but also his unwavering dedication to advancing scientific knowledge. It serves as a testament to one man's profound impact on shaping our understanding of biology and evolution during the vibrant era of 19th-century science.
