Wider Image: Fighting the Jigger Parasite
School children stand barefoot in a queue waiting for jiggers in their feet to be removed during a medical outreach project conducted by Sole Hope in Kalebera village, Jinja district, eastern Uganda August 6, 2015. The problem of jigger parasites, female sand fleas that burrow their way under skin, is widespread in the eastern, northern and northeastern parts of Uganda. Left untreated, the parasite can lead to secondary infections that can be fatal. NGO Sole Hope works with local and international volunteers to treat sufferers, removing the parasites either with safety pins or razor blades. Encouraging people to cover their feet is part of the battle against the parasite; treatment includes a free pair of shoes as very few of those affected are able to afford even sandals. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful image, school children in Kalebera village, Jinja district, eastern Uganda stand barefoot in a queue, patiently waiting for jiggers to be removed from their feet. The jigger parasite, also known as female sand fleas, is a widespread problem in the eastern, northern and northeastern parts of Uganda. If left untreated, these parasites can cause secondary infections that can even be fatal. Sole Hope, an NGO working with local and international volunteers, conducts medical outreach projects to treat those affected by the jigger parasite. Using safety pins or razor blades, they carefully remove the parasites from the children's feet. However, treating the immediate issue is only part of the battle against this debilitating parasite. Encouraging people to cover their feet is crucial in preventing future infestations. As many of those affected cannot afford even sandals or shoes on their own, Sole Hope provides free pairs of shoes as part of their treatment program. This photograph captures both the heartbreaking reality faced by these school children and the hope brought by organizations like Sole Hope. It serves as a reminder that there are still communities around the world struggling with basic healthcare needs and highlights how simple interventions can make a significant impact on improving lives. Through initiatives like this one captured here by James Akena for Reuters Images' Wider Image series titled "Fighting the Jigger Parasite" we are reminded of our collective responsibility to address global health disparities and work towards creating a more equitable world for all.
