The huddled rooftops, the sprawling streets, green trees and multi-storey flats

The huddled rooftops, the sprawling streets, green trees and multi-storey flats, long roads and wide open parks. They all add up to a panorama of Thornaby with the old village green and parish church in the foreground and the tree-bordered Village Park across Thornaby Road. Over to the right is the old airfield, now an industrial estate with Hintons huge warehouse at the edge of the picture, In the centre are the new towns shopping precincts, the Golden Eagle Hotel, and the Thornaby Sports Pavilion, with behind them the high-rise blocks of flats, Hudson House and Anson House, standing like big brothers above their neighbours. 25th June 1979

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Thornaby in all its glory. The huddled rooftops and sprawling streets paint a vivid picture of a vibrant community nestled amidst green trees and multi-storey flats. As your eyes wander through the frame, you can't help but be drawn to the long roads that lead to wide open parks, inviting you to explore their beauty. In the foreground, the old village green takes center stage alongside the parish church, reminding us of Thornaby's rich history and deep-rooted traditions. Across Thornaby Road lies the tree-bordered Village Park, offering a serene escape from bustling city life. To the right of this picturesque scene stands an industrial estate that was once an airfield. Hintons huge warehouse proudly marks its presence at the edge of this snapshot in time. As we shift our gaze towards the center, we are greeted by modernity intertwined with nostalgia. The new town's shopping precincts beckon shoppers while iconic landmarks like Golden Eagle Hotel and Thornaby Sports Pavilion stand tall as symbols of community spirit. Above it all loom Hudson House and Anson House - high-rise blocks that watch over their neighbors like protective big brothers.
