Hard at work on a new nature reserve are these Reinwood Junior School, Oakes

Hard at work on a new nature reserve are these Reinwood Junior School, Oakes, pupils (from left) Mark Rayner, Paul Coupland, Sukdip Kaur and Lyndsey Anchor. Deputy head Mr Stephen Broadbery and his class of woodland next to the school last November and it now includes a butterfly garden and pond. He said he had responded to an advertisement wanting people to release butterflies into the wild, and red admirals, small tortoiseshells and painted ladies were to be sent to him from Guernsey in their chrysalis stage. Frogspawn will also be put in the pond. The wood has been cleared of dumped rubbish and planted with trees - including firs and sycamores - and shrubs. Already a grey squirrel and a woodpecker have been spotted there. 15th May 1986

EDITORS COMMENTS
Reinwood Junior School Pupils Transform Woodland into Nature Reserve". In this photo print, we see the dedicated students of Reinwood Junior School in Oakes hard at work, as they transform a once neglected woodland into a flourishing nature reserve. Standing proudly with their spades in hand are Mark Rayner, Paul Coupland, Sukdip Kaur, and Lyndsey Anchor - young environmentalists determined to make a difference. Under the guidance of Deputy Head Mr. Stephen Broadbery, these enthusiastic pupils have taken on the challenge of creating a haven for wildlife right next to their school. Starting last November, they have tirelessly cleared away dumped rubbish and planted an array of trees and shrubs including firs and sycamores. Their efforts go beyond just planting; they have also created a butterfly garden complete with vibrant flowers that will soon welcome red admirals, small tortoiseshells, and painted ladies from Guernsey. Excitement fills the air as frogspawn is set to be introduced into the newly formed pond. Already this transformed woodland has attracted curious visitors such as a grey squirrel and even a woodpecker! These young conservationists are proving that through dedication and hard work, positive change can happen within our own communities. This heartwarming image captures not only their commitment but also serves as an inspiration for future generations to take action towards preserving our precious natural world.
