A Musicians Union dispute blacked out the recording of a BBC Christmas show by Andy
A Musicians Union dispute blacked out the recording of a BBC Christmas show by Andy Williams at Warwick University. Musicians refused to play for him and 1, 300 fans were told the show was cancelled. But the 50-year-old star decided some sort of show should go on. Backed by a pianist instead of the anticipated full concert orchestra, he gave a 45-minute stage performance. And Midlands-born comedian Lenny Henry, who was also due to have been in the show, stayed on to add another 25-minute act.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. In the midst of a Musicians Union dispute, Andy Williams found himself at Warwick University for a BBC Christmas show that seemed destined to be cancelled. However, refusing to disappoint his loyal fans, the 50-year-old star decided to forge ahead with an alternative plan. With the absence of a full concert orchestra due to the ongoing dispute, Williams took to the stage accompanied only by a pianist. Undeterred by this unexpected change, he delivered an unforgettable 45-minute performance that showcased his immense talent and passion for music. Adding another layer of excitement to this impromptu show was Midlands-born comedian Lenny Henry, who had also been scheduled to perform alongside Williams. Despite the challenges faced by both artists, they joined forces on stage and treated their audience to an additional 25 minutes of laughter and entertainment. The disappointment caused by the cancellation announcement quickly transformed into awe as these two incredible performers demonstrated their unwavering dedication and adaptability. This photograph serves as a reminder that even in times of conflict or unforeseen circumstances, true artists have the ability to rise above it all and create something truly memorable. Taken in Coventry during October 1981, this image encapsulates not just a moment in time but also represents the spirit of perseverance within both musicians and fans alike.
