EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the picturesque village of Beddgelert in Wales, believed to be the supposed location of the famous folklore tale of the dog Gelert. The image, taken in 1879, transports us back in time to a place steeped in history and legend. According to folklore, Gelert was a faithful hound belonging to Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd. One day, upon returning home from hunting, Llywelyn discovered his infant son's crib overturned and covered in blood. Assuming Gelert had attacked his child, he immediately slew the dog. However, as he searched further, he found his unharmed son next to the body of a wolf that Gelert had killed while protecting him. Overcome with grief for killing his loyal companion unjustly, Llywelyn buried Gelert with great ceremony near this very spot. The story of Gelert has been passed down through generations as a cautionary tale about jumping to conclusions without all the facts. This print not only showcases the beauty of Beddgelert but also serves as a reminder of the power and enduring nature of folk tales. As we gaze upon this historical image captured over a century ago, we are reminded that some stories never fade away – they become ingrained in our cultural fabric forever.
