EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the moment of quiet anticipation as Acting Sergeant Herbert Gibson of the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, waits to have his shirt examined by the Louse Patrol during World War I. The year was 1914-1918, and Gibson, born in September 1889, penned a heartfelt letter to his loved one, Ciss, on the reverse of the print. He enclosed fourteen postcards he hoped she would appreciate, along with the program of the concert he had previously mentioned. Despite the uncertainty and hardships of war, Gibson assured Ciss that he was in good health and expressed his hope that she was likewise. Written in his own hand, the letter adds a personal touch to this historical image, offering a glimpse into the daily life of a soldier during wartime and the enduring strength of the human connection.
