EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century print by Marcus Elieser Bloch, titled Plate 109 from his monumental work "Naturgeschichte der ausländischen Fische" (Natural History of Foreign Fishes), showcases a captivating collection of various seahorse species. Bloch's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate illustrations of these enchanting bony fish. Seahorses, belonging to the Syngnathidae family, are renowned for their unique physical characteristics. With their equine heads, prehensile tails, and camouflaged bodies, they blend seamlessly into their marine environments. In this print, we find several species of seahorses, including the Dragon Seahorse (Hippocampus draco), also known as Pegasus Draconis, and the Short Dragonfish (Stenodontus brevis). The Dragon Seahorse, depicted on the left side of the print, is characterized by its elongated snout, protruding eyes, and vibrant colors. The Short Dragonfish, on the other hand, is a small, slender fish with a distinctively short snout and a body adorned with dark spots. Bloch's illustrations also feature other fascinating marine creatures, such as the Eurypegasus (Eurypegasus draconis), also known as the Longsnout Seahorse, and the Seamoth (Syngnathus), also known as the Sea Moth. The Eurypegasus is distinguished by its long, slender snout and elongated pectoral fins, while the Seamoth resembles a small, translucent fish with a long, snakelike body. This exquisite print is a testament to Bloch's dedication to documenting the natural world and his exceptional artistic skills. It offers a glimpse into the rich diversity of marine life that existed during the 19th century, inspiring awe and wonder in viewers even today.
