EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored botanical engraving is a beautiful representation of Turnip and Rocket Cabbage, or Dog Mustard, as it was known during the late 18th century. The image is taken from Joshua Hamilton's Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, published in London in 1792. The work was an enlarged edition of the original herbal by the famous English herbalist, Nicholas Culpeper, with several hundred additional plants added from Sir John Hill. The Turnip and Rocket Cabbage, also known as Brassica juncea, is a cruciferous vegetable that belongs to the mustard family. The plant is depicted in various stages of growth, from the small, simple flowers at the top to the large, round turnips growing beneath the ground. The rocket cabbage, or rucola, is also shown in the image, with its distinctive rosette of pinnate leaves and small, white flowers. Botanical illustrations like this one were an essential tool for herbalists and physicians during the 18th and 19th centuries. They provided accurate records of plant specimens and helped identify medicinal plants for use in herbal remedies. The intricate copperplate engraving technique used in this print allowed for exceptional detail and clarity, making it an invaluable resource for those studying the natural world. The Turnip and Rocket Cabbage was believed to have various medicinal properties during this time. The turnips were used to treat swellings, while the rocket cabbage was believed to have cooling and healing properties. The plant was also used as a condiment and was believed to aid digestion. This stunning hand-colored botanical engraving is a testament to the rich history of herbal medicine and the importance of accurate botanical records. It offers a glimpse into the past, providing us with a deeper understanding of the natural world and the knowledge that shaped the medical practices of the past.
