EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Princess Alice of Greece, also known as Princess Alice of Battenberg, is captured in a moment of quiet reflection around the year 1916. Born on February 25, 1885, in Darmstadt, Grand Duchy of Hesse, Alice was the eldest daughter of Princess Victoria of Hesse and Prince Louis of Battenberg. Her royal lineage was significant, as her maternal grandparents were Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and Empress Frederick, the eldest daughter of German Emperor Frederick III. At the time of this photograph, Alice was a young woman of 31 years old, having married Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark in 1903. The couple would eventually have five children, including the future Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, who was born in 1921. The image shows Alice in a simple yet elegant dress, with her hair styled in a classic updo. Her expression is thoughtful, her gaze fixed on an unseen point in the distance. The photograph was likely taken during a visit to Edinburgh, Scotland, where her husband served as High Commissioner for Greece between 1915 and 1917. Princess Alice's life was marked by tragedy as well as royalty. During World War II, she risked her life to save Jewish refugees by hiding them in the cellars of her home in Athens. Tragically, she and her daughter, Princess Sophie, were killed by a German shell during the Battle of Athens in October 1941. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of Princess Alice of Greece, a woman who defied the expectations of her time and left a lasting impact on history.
