EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1900-1974), is depicted in full Scottish regalia, proudly wearing a tartan kilt, sporran, and a sgian-dubh (a traditional Scottish dagger) at his side. The Duke of Gloucester, who was the third son of King George V and Queen Mary, is seen here in his role as a devoted and loving uncle to his niece, Queen Elizabeth II. At the time this photograph was taken, in 1908, Prince Henry was just an young boy, but he would go on to play a significant role in British history. When his elder brother, King George VI, ascended to the throne in 1936 following the abdication of Edward VIII, Prince Henry was appointed as the potential regent for his niece, Elizabeth, who was still a child at the time. This meant that the Duke of Gloucester was required to remain in the United Kingdom until the young Queen came of age, in case her father died and she ascended the throne under age. The Duke of Gloucester's Scottish attire in this photograph is a nod to his strong connection to Scotland, where he spent much of his childhood. He was also the Duke of Edinburgh in Scotland, a title that was later held by his nephew, Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the Duke of Gloucester's important role in the British monarchy and his deep-rooted love for his family and his country.
