EDITORS COMMENTS
This vividly colored engraving captures the intense gaze and eloquent oratory of Patrick Henry (1736-1799), an American political leader of the late 18th century. Henry is best known for his influential role in the American Revolution and his opposition to the Federalist political movement. Born in a Virginia planter family, Henry rose to prominence as an attorney before entering politics. His fiery speeches, including his famous "Give me liberty, or give me death!" address, galvanized support for the cause of American independence. As a leading figure in the Republican movement, Henry advocated for states' rights and a strong central government with limited powers. His anti-Federalist stance led him to oppose the ratification of the United States Constitution, fearing it would grant too much power to the federal government. Despite his opposition, Henry eventually relented and supported the new government, serving as the first Governor of Virginia under the new Constitution. This engraving, produced in the late 18th century, showcases Henry's distinguished appearance with his powdered wig, ringlet curls, and formal attire. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of his coat to the texture of his hair, transport us back to the era of the American Revolution and the formative years of the United States.
