EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Olax stricta, also known as Spermaxirum strictum, Olace stremenzita, or Lambrus spinimanus, among other names. The illustration is a remarkable example of the botanical and scientific illustration techniques of the 19th century, produced in Italy by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. Turpin (1775-1840) is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of his time, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional skill in capturing the intricacies of natural forms. This illustration was drawn and directed by Turpin, and engraved by Corsi, published by Batelli e Figli in Florence, Italy, as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, in 1837. The subject of the illustration, Olax stricta, is a marine crustacean belonging to the family Xanthidae, also known as helmet crabs or masked crabs. These crabs are characterized by their distinctive helmet-shaped carapace, which resembles a crab's head with large, bulging eyes and a pair of antennae extending from the front. Olax stricta is also known for its spiny legs and pincers, which it uses for defense and to capture prey. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Olax stricta, as well as the scientific and artistic techniques of the time. The intricate details of the crab's anatomy, combined with the beautiful hand-coloring, make this a stunning and valuable addition to any collection of botanical or scientific illustrations.
