EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving by Oudet, after a botanical illustration by Edouard Maubert, showcases the distinctive beauty of the Ginkgo biloba, or Gingko, also known as the Maidenhair Tree or the Fossil Tree. Depicted here is the tree in its full autumnal glory, with its fan-shaped leaves turning a brilliant yellow before shedding, and the distinctive fruits or nuts, which are reminiscent of a fan with their intricate, fan-like structure. The Ginkgo biloba is a living fossil, with its origins dating back over 200 million years. Once widespread throughout the northern hemisphere, this tree is now considered endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as the effects of climate change. The tree is native to China, but is now cultivated and planted in various parts of the world as an ornamental tree and for its medicinal properties. This engraving is taken from Pierre Oscar Reveil's "La Regne Vegetal: Planets Agricoles et Forestieres," published by L. Guerin in Paris between 1864 and 1871. The work was a comprehensive study of the vegetable kingdom, featuring over 5,000 botanical illustrations, and was considered one of the most important botanical works of the 19th century. The intricate detail and artistry of this engraving serve as a testament to the dedication and passion of the botanists, illustrators, and engravers of the time, who sought to document and preserve the natural world for future generations. Today, the Ginkgo biloba remains an iconic symbol of the resilience and beauty of nature, and serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species and ecosystems.
