EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative overhead drawing from 1912 offers a unique perspective of Belfast, showcasing the prominent positions of the Ulster Hall and the football ground. The illustration accompanies a feature in The Sphere, reporting on Winston Churchill's visit to the city that year. Churchill, who was then the Home Secretary, was scheduled to speak at Ulster Hall but was forced to abandon his plans due to the simmering political tensions in Northern Ireland. The significance of Ulster Hall in this historical context is immense. In 1886, Churchill's father, Randolph Churchill, had given a speech at the hall where he famously declared, "Ulster will fight, and Ulster will be right." This statement came during a time of controversy and friction between Unionists in Ulster and the British government over the issue of Home Rule for Ireland. The Orangemen, a Protestant loyalist organization, had organized protests against the proposed Home Rule bill, leading to widespread unrest and violence. The football ground, located nearby, was also a source of tension during this period. The city's football clubs, many of which were aligned with either the Unionist or Nationalist communities, were often involved in violent clashes during matches. The political climate in Belfast during Churchill's visit was tense, with Orangemen staging protests and calls for his cancellation growing louder. Ultimately, the Home Secretary's speech was cancelled due to the volatile situation, leaving him to depart from Belfast without addressing the crowd at Ulster Hall.
