EDITORS COMMENTS
The Arena Civica, or Civic Arena, in Milan, Italy, is a historic building that was constructed in 1807, designed by the renowned neo-classical architect Luigi Canonica. This magnificent structure, depicted in this handcoloured copperplate engraving by Giarre Jr., was inspired by the ancient Roman amphitheaters and was intended to serve as a venue for various public events, including military parades and civic celebrations. The engraving provides a vivid representation of the Arena Civica during a military parade, likely commemorating the Battle of Marignano, fought in 1515 between the Italian forces of King Francis I of France and the Swiss Confederacy. The scene is filled with an array of military personnel from both sides, showcasing the fashion and weaponry of the era. The Italian forces are depicted with lancers, pikemen, and artillery, while the Swiss Confederacy is represented by their famous bassorilievo, or bas-relief, armor. The Battle of Marignano was a significant event in the Italian Wars, which lasted from 1494 to 1559, and marked the end of the Swiss Confederacy's military dominance in Italy. The victory allowed King Francis I to expand his territories and solidify his control over northern Italy. This illustration, taken from Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1845, offers a unique glimpse into the historical fashion and military tactics of the time. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the engraving bring the past to life, making it a valuable historical and artistic treasure.
