EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Major Edward Corringham Mick Mannock, VC, DSO & Two Bars, MC & Bar, one of the most decorated pilots in World War I. Born on April 20, 1887, in County Meath, Ireland, Mannock joined the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) in 1915, quickly distinguishing himself as an exceptional aviator. By the end of the war, he had amassed an impressive record, with 73 confirmed victories and numerous decorations, including the Victoria Cross, the highest military honor in the British Empire. Mannock's exploits in the skies over the Western Front are the stuff of legend. His fearless approach to combat and innovative tactics earned him the respect of his comrades and the admiration of his enemies. This portrait, taken during his service, conveys the intensity and focus of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of victory in the face of great danger. Mannock's tragic end came on August 26, 1918, when he was killed in action during a dogfight over France. His loss was deeply felt by the RFC and the British people, who mourned the loss of a true hero. Today, Major Edward Corringham Mick Mannock remains a symbol of courage and determination, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the men and women who served in the Great War.
