In this enchanting illustration by Cecil Aldin, titled "Jack and Jill," we find our two intrepid friends, Jack and Jill, embarking on a journey within four miles of London. The year is 1914, and the 1910s are in full swing. Jack, with a book in hand and a weary expression on his face, leads the way, while Jill follows behind, her gaze fixed on the distant horizon. Their faithful companions, a dog and a cat, accompany them on their adventure. The dog, with a collar around its neck, trots along the side of the road, its tail wagging in excitement. The cat, however, seems less enthused, lying down in the grass and looking up at its owners with a hint of hunger in its eyes. As the sun begins to rise over the city, the friends pause to take in the breathtaking view. The dome of St. Paul's Cathedral, a historic landmark and symbol of London's rich history, stands proudly in the distance, its grandeur reflected in the still waters of the milestone.
